You Should Be Watching: Obi-Wan Kenobi

Hello there, welcome to another edition of You Should Be Watching. The series where we let you know what shows you should keep an eye on. This week we travel to a galaxy far far away because I think that you should be watching Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Hello There

Obi-Wan Kenobi is the latest Star Wars series to hit Disney+. Directed by Deborah Chow and starring Ewan McGregor, the series follows Obi-Wan in the years after episode 3. Obi-Wan isn’t the wise cracking Jedi master from the prequels, but he also isn’t the wise old man from the original trilogy. Obi-Wan Kenobi bridges the character gap that had been left blank for almost two decades, showing us how Obi-Wan goes from Ewan McGregor to Alec Guinness. You’ll see Obi-Wan adjust to living in hiding as well as avoiding the Inquisitors, the newest bad guys in town – most notably the third sister Reva who seems to have it out for Kenobi specifically.

Another Happy Landing

The best thing about Obi-Wan Kenobi is definitely the return of Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan. If you grew up with the prequels like me, your inner child is screaming with joy. He isn’t the only prequel actor to return as well. Jimmy Smits and Temuera Morrison also return as Bail Organa and the clones respectfully. After so many series and films focusing more on the original trilogy and connecting to the sequels, it’s definitely refreshing to see these prequel characters and stories getting some more love. Each actors performance also feels so much like they did in the prequels, so much so that you wouldn’t guess that it’s been ages since these actors have been in this universe.

I Have the High Ground

Enough about nostalgia, let me introduce these new Inquisitors. Obi-Wan Kenobi features three main Inquisitors: The Grand Inquisitor, the third Sister, and the fifth Brother. The Grand Inquisitor and fifth Brother have both previously appeared in Star Wars Rebels whilst the third Sister is making her first appearance. These Jedi Hunters are the main driving force of the series, pushing Obi-Wan out of hiding in their quest to eradicate the Jedi. They’re some pretty tough customers, especially the Grand Inquisitor with those yellow eyes and pointy teeth. They aren’t the only villainous force though; I won’t spoil anything but there are some powerful people who also want to see Kenobi disposed of.

And there you have it, a brief rundown on Obi-Wan Kenobi. If you grew up with the prequels, I’m sure you’re going to adore this series. If you weren’t the biggest prequel fan, there is still enough ties to the original trilogy that you’ll still have a blast. Obi-Wan Kenobi is currently streaming on Disney+.
