Movies That’ll Make You Wish You Grew Up In The ‘80s

Ahh the ‘80s! The decade that society is still obsessed with today, often paired with sayings like, “I was born in the wrong generation”. Its bold fashion, synth dominant music, cool cars and superficially laid back lifestyle, make it all the more appealing compared to living in 2021. Until we are able to time travel, here are some movies that’ll make you live out your ‘80s teen fantasy.

Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982)

Based off an actual undercover report about the lives of Southern Californian High School students, Fast Times at Ridgemont High is the closest thing we’ll ever get to a typical day in the life of an American teenager. Capturing small details of teenage life, this film is both equally raw and hilarious.

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986)

While we were home sick watching Ready Steady Cook, Ferris Bueller was out taking trips to the art gallery and attending a sports game. This film stands for the saying of ‘being young and having fun!

The Lost Boys (1987)

The OG vampire film, packed with horror, comedy and Californian style. Move over Twilight, these vampires actually know how to have a good time.

Christine (1983)

If the fear of your first car being possessed by an evil spirit didn’t worry you, maybe it will now!

Pretty In Pink (1986)

Part time jobs at the local record store, high school parties and Andie’s exceptional dressmaking skills. Pretty In Pink embraces first love and life struggles in an innocent way, while allowing us to appreciate the ‘80s charm of adolescence.

The Breakfast Club (1985)

If I’d known that detention could be this much fun, I would’ve rolled my skirt up more often (just private girls school things). No one wants to be stuck at a Saturday detention, but this bunch make it all worth while. Who would’ve thought that being in trouble could be so iconic?

Prom Night (1980)

Just like our year 11 formal… minus the bloody murders!

Mystic Pizza (1988)

Don’t let the cheesy title fool you! Mystic Pizza packs a punch full of heartfelt humour and coming of age nuances. If working at a pizza restaurant is this thrilling, sign me up!

Weird Science (1985)

Imagine accidentally creating the woman (or man) of your dreams?! This is a reality for teen misfits Gary and Wyatt. Is this a science experiment you’d be keen to try out?

Sit back, relax and soak up some ‘80s nostalgia this weekend!
