Greta Gerwig is well known for her movies like ‘Little Women’ and ‘Lady Bird’, and her next film, ‘Barbie’ is set to be her most anticipated yet.
Starring Margot Robbie as the classic children’s doll Barbie and Ryan Gosling as her stud counterpart Ken, this casting is already intriguing audiences about what the movie is going to be like. So, what is the film actually going to be about? Will it be like those classic Barbie movies we all watched growing up? For now, not much has been unveiled, so here is everything we know about the upcoming 2023 Barbie movie so far.
1. The cast is completely star studded
While Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling are names big enough to bring in masses of audiences for the film, the cast has many more iconic names other than these two. The cast so far includes Will Ferrel, Nicola Coughlan (Bridgerton), America Ferrera (Ugly Betty), Michael Cera (Juno), Issa Rae, Emma Mackey (Sex Education), Ncuti Gatwa (Sex Education, Doctor Who) and that’s only the main cast.
2. There are going to be multiple Barbies. Maybe even a Barbie multiverse?
According to The New York Times, there will be multiple Barbies and multiple Kens. Could this mean a Barbie multiverse or different Barbie universes? I guess we’ll have to wait and see. Also, apparently Will Ferrell is going to be playing the head of a toy company similar to Mattel (the company that manufactures Barbies) so the movie may be super meta as well.
3. The classic Barbie Girl song by Aqua won’t be in the film much to everyone’s dismay
Unfortunately, it has been announced by Aqua’s managers that the song ‘Barbie Girl’ will not be played in the movie. Honestly, I hope this means that a new original Barbie soundtrack is made instead, perhaps with hits by Olivia Rodrigo or Harry Styles?
4. Margot Robbies ‘Barbie’ costumes will be in that classic pink colour
Photos have been released of Margot Robbie sporting multiple pink outfits and honestly it makes me want to buy a whole new wardrobe in that exact colour.
5. The movie is being filmed in England
According to IMdb, the film is being filmed in London at the Warner Brothers studios. As of yet, it hasn’t been announced if the film is actually set in London or if it is just being filmed there.
6. The film will be rated PG and is a comedy
Deadline has confirmed that the movie will be a comedy and will be rated pg. So expect family friendly fun and goofiness!
7. Ryan Gosling was the one and only choice for Ken
According to Deadline and Warner Brothers, Ryan Gosling was the one and only choice to play Ken for the Barbie movie, and Greta Gerwig and Warner Brothers wanted him from the start. The casting has been met with mixed views on twitter so it will be interesting to see if he lives up to the hype!
The Barbie movie directed by Greta Gerwig is set to be released in theatres on July 21 2023.
